Staff Reporter | Ekushe Media:
Ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan has resulted in the cancellation of more than 550 scheduled commercial flights, severely disrupting regional air travel. According to FlightRadar24, a leading global flight tracking platform, both countries have witnessed widespread airspace disruptions amid escalating cross-border violence.
Flight Cancellations Spike:
As of Wednesday, 135 flights in Pakistan- amounting to nearly 16% of its total scheduled operations—were canceled. In India, 417 flights, or approximately 3% of total air traffic, were called off. In response, leading Indian airlines, including Air India, have issued travel advisories for passengers. Due to the closure of key airports such as Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh (Ladakh), multiple flights have been suspended until May 10.
The Trigger: Retaliatory Strikes and Escalation:
This surge in cancellations follows India’s late-night military airstrike on Pakistan Tuesday night, reportedly carried out as retaliation for a recent gunmen attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. According to Indian military sources, the operation lasted only 25 minutes, during which at least 24 missiles were launched.
India claims the airstrike killed around 70 people, though Pakistan’s military reports 26 fatalities. Additionally, there have been intense artillery exchanges across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, leading to the deaths of at least 15 civilians and injuries to over 30 others in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan Labels the Strike as ‘Act of War’:
Pakistan has labeled India’s actions as a clear act of war and has briefed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the matter. On Wednesday, Pakistan’s National Security Committee held an emergency meeting, granting its military authorization to take “appropriate countermeasures.”
Military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated, “These actions are purely defensive. Pakistan is a highly responsible nation. However, we will take all necessary steps to protect the honor, integrity, and sovereignty of our homeland-at any cost.”
Regional & Global Implications:
The conflict, coming at a time of global geopolitical uncertainty, poses serious risks not only for South Asian peace but also for international flight safety, trade logistics, and diplomatic relations. Bangladesh, sharing deep ties with both countries, continues to monitor the situation closely.
